HISTORY OF SALINAS
The Cabo de Gata Natural Pork is one of the most importont
protected oreos in Europe, declored a Biosphere Reserve by
UNESCO.
Sheet of brackish water where salt extraction has been exploited
since forever. Evaporators, concentrators ond crystollizers heoters
extracted through ancient processes, morine essence remoins piled
in blinding white mounds.
LasSalinas de Cabo de Gata were formed due to gravity of the
water inflows ond strength of westerly winds, resulting in a logoon
that wos progressively becoming one of the most importont
wetlonds in Andalusia. Some 400 hectares, extending parallel to
the coastline, seporated from the beach by a borrier of dunes is
joined by a volcanic mountain range.

SAN MIGUEL DE CABO DE GATA NEIGHBOURHOOD
Las Salinos is one ofthe most important ecosystems in Andalusia
that offers rest and nesting for more than 80 species of birds,
amongst which the pink flamingo is included.
Cabo de Gata is the southemmost town of Cabo de Gota Natural
Park Nijar and in fact this neighbourhood belongs to the municipality
of Almerio. With little more than a thousond inhabitants this
troditionolly known for being a fishing villoge.
Church built in 1907 on a plotform to prevent ingress of
water ond sand. This church is chorocterized by
sobriety ond historie eclecticism ofthe twentieth
century of Almeria. Its most choracteristic
feotures ore its cemetery courtyord ond
the toll belfry decorated with smoll
windows ond pyramid topped with on

grounds adjacentto the lighthouse, which was olso exploited as
atuna trap with the name of Cave of Cabo de Gata,todoy,
`la Almadraba de Monteleva` and took advantage of
the abundance oftuno that is in the sea within
this oreo.

visitors a range of services
including occessible beoches,
showers, first oid points, information
and daily cleoning ofthem.

Cabo de Gafa has a promenode running porollel to its long
beoch with several restaurants and bors where you can
toste excellent fresh fish cooked in the troditionol
woy. It is unique to stroll, relax with a swim

In LoAlmadraba de Monteleva the

losttime in 1963.
The church was restored bythe diocese and the city of Almeria, to
allow visits for Sunday Moss. Herewe can find a touristinformation
point.
Just in the rood that leads to the
lighthouse, there is a water intake pointforthe
solt flats (Las Salinas), called LOSMOTORESwhich
consists on a small pond and a shed. A new channel of 5
km was made and these electric motors were installed to
pump the wáter through Lo Fabriquilla village
