Yoshimasa spent his whole life building Higashiyama den
villa. Here, the beauty of nature in each different season ís
adapted skillfully giving the atmosphere 01 a profound
spiritual world. Its garden matches harmoniously with
Kannon-den (Ginkaku) and Togu-do, and catches people`s
heart.

Born in Osaka. Though he more or
less expressed the beauty of nature
in Haiku poems, he preferred and

Tomioka Tessai (1836 -1924)
Born in Kyoto. He studied ancient [apanese thought and
culture, Confucianism and Buddhísm. In rus middle age,
he started Shijosect Yamatoe (Iapanese) paintíng. In his lat-
er year, he became the center of Nansoga painting, colorful-
ly and dynamically painting eIegant Chinese paintings.

Gensou Okuda (1912- 2003)
Born in Hiroshima. He paints energetically
and enjoys numerous awards at Nitten. He
is now the master of Japanese painting cir-
cIes. In 1973, he was awarded Japan Acade-
my of Arts Award and in 1984Order 01Cul-
tural Merit.

Thís was originally ealled Kannon-den, after Shariden of Rokuonji (Kinkakuji ) and Ruriden of
Saihouji. It is two storied: the first floor, Shinku-den ís built in Shoin style, traditional Japanese
residential arehiteeture style, and the second floor Cho-onkaku is Chinese temple style having
Katoumado in the panel wall and a Chinese sliding door. The bronze phoenix on the roof facing
east constantly guards Ginkakuji dedieated to Kannonbosatsu, the Goddess of Merey.

Buddhist Hall owned by Yoshimasa. The oldest Shoin style building existing with one story
Irimoya style and a roof thatched with Iapanese cypress. The hall has a panel floored area in the
south part, two Buddhist alter rooms on one síde and two (6 tatami mat and 4.5 tatami mat)
rooms in the north side. The 4.5 tatami mat room in the northeast síde is called Dojinsai, and
was the stage originating Higashiyama culture. It is also said to be the beginning of So-an style
tearoom and 4.5 tatami mat rooms.
