ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR
THE EXCAVATIONS OF THE ROMAN
THEATRE OF FLORENCE
The foundations of Palazzo Vecchio
rest on the magnificent theatre of
Roman Florentia, built in the 1st
century BCand enlarged between the
1st and 2nd centuries AD. With the
aid of multimedia guides, the visitor
can admire the parts of the ancient
theatre and the successive layers
of medieval streets and buildings
brought to light by the excavations,
First fLoor
The "Saione dei Cinquecento" (Hall
of the Five Hundred), the most
emblematic room in the palace,
was originally built in the early
15th century to house the Maggiore
Consiglio, Florence`s legislative
assembly, after the number of its
members increased. Under Cosimo
1 de` Medici it beca me one of the
most sumptuous of Late Renaissance
reception halls and is still the
city`s primary venue for ceremonial
events today. On the same floor, the
"Studiolo" of Francesco 1 was, on the
contrary, a miniature wunderkammer
open only to the grand duke and his
closest guests. On the opposite side
of the hall, the Apartments of Leo
X are partly out of bounds to the
general public beca use they have
housed the offices of the mayor of
Florence since 1871.
