THE HORSE VESSEL

Dccorared with a horse mo-
tíf red cireles and isolated
S-shaped lines, this ceramic
vessel is reminiscent of
Numantian pieces. It is me
finest of its kind ever found
in me Madrid region.
BELT BUCKLE,
6th-8th centuryAD. A
rectangular plate with an
oval buckle wirh cells filled
with glass pasre. A very cha-
racteristic piece of Visigoth
jewellery, Such pieces have
generally been documented
in funerary contexts.

elcome to the Regional Archaeo-
logical Museum ofMadrid. This
institution was created with the in-
tention of providing rhe general public access
to the archaeology of our regio n by exhibiting
the material culture that its inhabitants have
lefi behind.
The Museum`s headquarters are situated in the
Madre de Dios Monastery, which was once
home to monks belonging to the Dominican
order. Although originally erected in 1565, the
current building carne into being during the
17th and 18th centuries. After its disentail-
ment from the Church in 1836, the building
took on judiciary-relared funcrions before
adopting its present-day role in 1999. In 2003
it opened its first permanent exhibition. More
information on the Museum`s collections, tern-
porary exhibitions and activities can be found
on its webpage. The premises are also home to
a specialised library and Museum shop.
