Tickets can also be purchased on the day of travel at Saga,
Arashiyama and Kameoka Torokko Stations.

Built by the monk Kukai (774-835), this temple began as a
cemetery and place to mourn the dead. It was later
transformed into a hall for chanting prayers by the priest
Honen (1133-1212). Today, it belongs to the Jodo Sect of
Buddhism and is officially known as Kaseisan Tozenin
Nenbutsuji. The 8,000 stone Buddha figurines and gravestones
date back to the temple`s days as a cemetery. On August
23-24 every year, the grounds are lit by thousands of lanterns as
part of a solemn service to honor the parted souls. In autumn,
the temple landscape is tinged red by the seasonal foliage
creating a masterpiece of beauty together with the Buddha
figurines and gravestones.
Located inside of Randen Arashiyama
Station, this mall is a perfect spot for
walkers to rest and relax thanks to
the footbath and benches. There are
also places to eat and shop, so it
draws a crowd. Travellers will enjoy
the convenient tourist services
including baggage storage, parcel
delivery and ATMs.

This `Kimono Forest` is the work of designer Yasumichi Morita. It consists of 600 poles
wrapped in ornately colored and patterned Kyoyuzen fabrics. At night, the poles are
delicately illuminated with soft lighting that creates an ambiance of nocturnal beauty.
This `Fureai Jizo` welcomes visitors to the
footbath.
This footbath is found on the platform of
Randen Arashiyama Station. Soaking your
tired feet after day of walking will soothe

Ride along the Hozukyo Gorge
Nestled amongst a thicket of tall bamboo stalks, Jikishian Temple began as a
thatched hut built in 1646 by the Zen monk Shoen Dokusho, one of the 10
disciples of the reputed Zen priest Ryuki Ingen. It was converted into a
convent under the Jodo Sect of Buddhism by the loyalist Tsubone Muraoka
(mother-in-law of Princess Atsuhime) at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
A quaint custom available to all in the main hall is the `omoidekusa,` on
which visitors write their grievances and they `toss them in the trash` to free
themselves of their woes. There are various points of interest within the
temple confines including a hall for honoring the temple`s founders, jizo
statues that guide miscarried and aborted fetuses to heaven, those that have
matchmaking powers and grant wishes, a kannon statue with an omoideku-
sa in hand, and the thatch-roofed Amidado Temple, which is open only on
special occasions.
Springtime brings camellias, weeping cherries, Thunberg spiraes, magnolias
and, in the garden of the main hall, rhododendrons. The weeping
peach trees are another botanical treat because of the pink and white
flowers that bloom on the same tree. The grounds are beautifully covered in
the autumnal foliage of the Japanese maples for a good part of fall, but all
year-long there are blossoms to enjoy including hydrangeas, anemones,
bamboo, sarcandra glabra, coralberries, wintersweets and more.
