Mt. Fuji the highest mountain in Japan, is known for its beautiful
shape of Konide, At the foot of the mountain and around its
wide base lies a beautiful resort area replete with abundant
natural scenery that includes lakes, plateaus, waterfalls and
.caves. This attractive sightseeing area is also dotted with
amusement parks, theme parks, and sports facilities. Mt. Fuji
and Kawaguchiko Stations on the Fujikyuko Une are the gate-
ways to the Fuji Five Lakes; JR`s Mishima, Shin-Fuji, and
Fujinomiya Stations provide access to the southern and west-
ern bases of Mt. Fuji; and Gotemba Statlon providesaccess to
the eastern base.

Places of Interese in the fuji five Lakes Arear
f!I lFuji-Yoshida
fuji- Yoshida (~d::*EB) has long flourished as the temple
town of the Kitaguchihongu-Fuji-Sengen-jinja Shrine. Some of its
older residences canibe seen on the approach to the shrine from
Mt. Fuji Sta. sightse`eing points include a park with abundant
greenery and rnuseurns, as well as Fujikyu Highland, an amuse-
ment park on the western outskirts of the town.
Kitaguchihongu-Fuji-Sengen-jinja Shrine (~tO*`8`~
±i~Fa`:f~H) 1S-m in. walk from Mt. Fuji Sta. or S mino by bus
(take the Fujikyu Bus for Gotemba Sta. and get off at the Asama
Jinja-mae Bus Stop). Built in 788 to put the minds of local people
fearing eruption of Mt. Fuji at ease, a majestic atmosphere pre-
vails within the grounds of this venerable shrine.

Fuji Five L.akes, and is a base for sightseeing on the northern foot
of Mt. Fuji that is, home to many hotels and inns. Lake
Kawaguchiko is also noted for a view of Mt. Fuji from its north-
ern shore, where the inverted image may be seen on the surface
of the lake waters. Also, a superb view of the lake can be
obtained here from Mt. Tenjo by taking a ropeway up from the
eastern shore.

and photographs are exhibited around the theme of Mt. Fuji.

can fully appreciate the abundant nature around the foot of Mt.
Fuji. Lake Saiko is the.second smallest lake next to Lake Shojiko.

smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes. About 15 hotels and inns are concen-
trated around its north shore, while the south shore is heme to a
guest house village. The view of Mt. Fuji from the lake`s north shore
is spectacular.

lake Mc)tosuko (i.Mgg)/i~) boasts one of the greatest water
depths of all of Japan`s lakes, while the exquisite view of Mt. Fuji
from its north shore is depicted on the 1,000 yen bill. There is
not as much tourist development here as there is around the
other four lakes, but one can enjoy the tranquility of nature.
There is pristine wilderness here, especially around the west
shore.
i..ake Motosuko Excursion Ship (*@j)/i~lilf~JtlS) leaves frorn
the pier on the southeast shore of Lake Motosuko, 5tmin. walk
from Lake Motosuko Bus Stop. Part of the shlp`s bottom is glass
and afford a view through the highly clear lake water. Operated:
9:30-15:30 every 40 min on Sat. Sun. and national holidays from
mid Mar. to late Nov. The service is suspended from Dec. to late
Mar. Fare: ~930 .
I!It.ake Yamanakako
lake Yamanakako (~ljl:p)t~) is the largest of the: five lakes
and is situated at the highest point among them, at 982! m. There
are many lakefront shops and restaurants, mainly in Asahigaoka.
This is one of Japan`s most popular resort areas, which is home
to a string of pensions, or guest houses.
lI..ake Yamanakako Excursion Ship (0.jI:P¡¡5~lilf~jÍj`d) leave
from the Asahigaoka pier on the south shore and lfrorn the
Yamanakako pier on the northwest shore. 2S-min. bus.ríde from
Mt. Fuji Sta. to Kankousen Noriba or Asahigaoka Bus Stop. The
ship circumnavigates the lake in about 35 minutes. Operated:
9:30-16: 15 (8:45-17:00 in summer) The service is suspended
from Dec. to Feb. Fare: `?I-930
"Yamanakako-no-Kaba" the KABA (hippo)ibus is an
amphibious bus offering guided tours both on the lan~ and the
water (15 mino each, total of 30 min., in Japanese only). It leaves
from Asahigaoka Bus Terminal. The fares are `?I-2,200 tor adults,
}f.1,100 for children over 4 years old, and `?I-400 for children from
Oto 3 years old (with no seat). There are 5-6 tours daily. Tours
should be booked in advance, but will be cancelled in case of bad
weather. The service dates, fares, and departure times; may vary
depending on the season. Please call 0555-73-8181 for .the latest
information.
Hana no Miyako Park (1EO)~B0:IiI) is located on a plateau
of 1,000 meters above sea level, and you can enjoy many kinds of
flowers with Mt. Fuji for a background from April to .October,
Is-min. walk from Hananomiyako-koen Bus Stop (30 min by bus
from Fujisan Sta. or 45 mino by bus from Gotemba Sta. to the
bus stop). Hours: 8:30-17:30 (Apr. 16-0ct. 15), 9:PO-16:30

• Asagiri Highland
Asagiri Highland (~Jj~~I*) is the name of the verdant
meadowlands stretching across the foot of the west s(de of Mt.
Fuji. A place renowned for dairy farming in [apan, an altítude of
between 700-1,000 m accounts for the cool sumrners there,
making it an ideal spot for recreation and sports.
Shiraito Falls (á*O)j~) is 20 mino by bus from F;ujinomiya
Sta. Falling from a 200m-wide cliffside, these falls derive their
name shiraito (white threads) from the beautiful way they
remind the viewer of strands of silk. :
Lake Tanuki (83~)tM, 13 mino by taxi from Shlralto` Falls, is a
pretty man-made lake whose water reflects an inverted image of
Mt. Fuji.
Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine (`¡`±ú.!*`g¡~r,,~*t±)
Approx. 10-min. walk from JR Fujinomiya Sta. Founded in 806,
this shrine is the head quarter of more than 1,300 Se;ngen-jinja
shrines all over Japan. The area above the 8th station 0)1 Mt. Fuji
belongs to the shrine, and the Okumiya inner shrine (s located
on the summit. The central shrine was built by Shogun
Tokugawa leyasu and is an important national cultural asset.

Mt. Fuji Sth¡Station (`¡`±WE:fr§)
Mt. Fuji`s 5th Station on the Yoshida Trail is located at 2,305 m
above sea level and is aecessible by bus via the Fuji Subaru Line.
There are also Sth stations on eaeh climbing trail of Fujinomiya,
Gotemba and Subashiri Trails. Many tourists, who are not there
to cllmb, also visit the 5th Station where Mt. Fuji`s summit is dis-
tinctly visible. Many bustling souvenir shops and restaurants ean
be enjoyed there.
GíI Clhnbing Mt. Fuji (`¡`±itW)
Mt. Fuji,the highest mountain in Japan, stands at a height of 3,776
m. The average ternperature at the summit is 4.8 `C (40.5F) in
July and 5.8 `C (42.5F) in August, with sudden snowfall in sum-
mero It is officiallyopen to elimbers in July and August. The rnost
popular way is to start climbing in the afternoon, spend the night
near the summit and start climbing again early morning to wateh
the sunrise on the summit. It takes about 6 hrs. from the 5th
Station to the summit, 3-4 hrs. from the summit to the 5th
Station. Considered a saered mountain in the Edo Period, Mt.
Fuji is still climbed by groups of worshippers. Being a relatively
easy clímb, young children as well as elder citizens can enjoy the
experience, but a minimum amount of effort should be made,
sueh as the preparation of clothes for eold weather, suitable
footwear, enough idrinking water and rainwear. Mountain huts
(open Jul-Aug.) are so crowded that guests are required to
share a room. Ifyou plan te lodge in a hut, reservation ls recorn-
mended.
