ThE S WIMMING STA-
DIUM is a great place to
cool off on a hot summer’s
day. The outdoor Olympic
complex has three swim-
ming pools: a 50-metre
pool, a diving pool and a
kids’ pool. There is even a
small round paddling pool
for the little ones, as well as
a water slide and café. The
Swimming Stadium is open
from May to September.
It’s just a short walk from
the Finnish National Opera.
Hammarskjöldintie 5
ThE KUMPULA OUTDOOR
SWIMMING POOL is another summer
favourite among families. There is a
25-metre pool, a diving pool, a kids’
pool and a paddling pool, as well as an
exercise area, a beach volleyball and
basketball court, a chess area, a bouncy
castle and a café. It is open from May to
August, and you can get there easily by
bus from Railway Square. Allastie 1
AT hIETANIEMI BEACh you can
swim and play beach volleyball and
basketball. There is also a playground,
changing rooms and a café-restaurant.
Nearby you can play mini-golf. To get
there, take Bus 24. Hiekkarannantie 11.
AURINKOLAhTI BEACh is Helsinki’s
answer to a Southern European holiday
destination. The 700-metre-long beach has
shallow water, making it perfect for smaller
children to splash around in. Services
include changing rooms, showers and a
café. You can get to Aurinkolahti in just 20
minutes from the city centre by riding the
metro to Vuosaari. Aurinkoranta 15.
SEURASAARI is a popular outdoor desti-
nation throughout the year. You can follow
the path around the pretty recreational
island and feed the tame squirrels. There
is also a swimming beach, kiosk, cafés, a
restaurant, a grilling area and an open-
air museum displaying historic wooden
buildings from across Finland. The island is
open year round. To get there from the city
centre, take Bus 24. The island is connected
to the mainland by a pretty white bridge.
PIhLA jASAARI is one of the most
popular recreational islands in Helsinki. Sun
worshipers can enjoy not only the swim-
ming beach and smooth granite rocks, but
also a restaurant, grilling areas and sauna.
There is even a campsite. A ferry operates
between the island and the mainland from
May to September. The crossing from either
Merisatama or Ruoholahti takes around 10
minutes.
MUSTASAARI is a popular island
among families with its farm animals,
nature trail, swimming beach, play-
ground and café. The island is open from
June to mid-August. The ferry crossing
from Taivallahti (at the end of Eteläinen
Hesperiankatu) takes around 15 minutes.
UUNISAARI is situated just off the
southern tip of Helsinki. With its sandy
beach and services, this recreational
island is a very good picnic destination.
There is a restaurant, café and sauna.
In summertime a ferry makes the short
crossing to the island from Merisataman-
tori by Kaivopuisto park, and in winter-
time you can walk to the island across a
pontoon bridge.
LONNA is a small island be-
tween the Market Square and
Suomenlinna. Services include
a restaurant and café, which
sells picnic supplies. The JT-
Line ferry operates between
Lonna and the Market Square
from mid-May to mid-August.
The crossing takes around 10
minutes.
TERvASAARI is an island off
the Kruununhaka district that
is connected to the mainland
by a land bridge. The island
has a restaurant, a playground,
a dog park, a swimming area
for dogs, and a pier for wash-
ing carpets. Take Bus 16 or
Bus 17 to get there from the
city centre.
Onni the Squirrel
welcomes you to stay!
PIKKUKOSKI BEACh is
a small and pretty sandy
swimming area on the
Vantaanjoki river. The
water is shallow and sandy,
making it particularly pop-
ular among small children.
There is a basketball court,
exercise equipment and a
playground. To get there,
take the local train N to the
Oulunkylä stop.
