As part of the Museumsinsel Master Plan, successive renovation work has been
ongoing in the Pergamonmuseum since 2013. As a consequence, we regret that
the large gallery containing the Pergamon Altar is currently closed, as are several
other exhibition spaces. We are, however, making an effort to make as many objects
accessible as possible.

The Pergamonmuseum
The Pergamonmuseum was constructed by Ludwig Hoffmann
between 1910 and 1930, following drafts by Alfred Messel.
A smaller structure sat on the same location for several years be-
forehand. However, insufficient foundations soon led to damage
to the building to the point that it had to be demolished.
The new, larger Pergamonmuseum was constructed as a threewing
building. As part of the Museuminsel master plan the museum has
been under refurbishment in sections since 2013, and a fourth wing
_ __ __ will.be added. based on-,lesigD~by_ the architectural firm Unggrs._
During this refurbishment the hall with the Pergamon Altar, the
North Wing, the Hellenistic Hall and other halls are closed. The
South Wing of the Pergamonmuseum, with the Ishtar Gate, the
Processional Way, and the Market Gate of Miletus, as well as the
Museum für Islamische Kunst, will remain open.

The coUections
The Pergamonmuseum houses three collections of the Staatliche
Museen zu Berlin: portions of the Antikensammlung (Collection of
Classical Antiquities), the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum
of the Ancient Near East], and the Museum für Islamische Kunst
(Museum of Islamic Artl.
The Antikensammlung is one of the most important collections of
Greek and Roman art worldwide. Dne gem of Roman architecture
is the Market Gate of Miletus from the time around 100 AD.
T_he`{()rd~rasiatische.s Museum presents_artefacts from ancjent _
Near Eastern cultural history from over 6 millennia, primarily from
Mesopotamia, Syria and Anatolia. The approximately 500,000
artefacts were mainly obtained through German archaeological
digs in Babylon, Assur, Uruk and Ten Halaf.
The Museum für Islamische Kunst is one of the world`s largest
and most significant museums of its type. It unites masterpieces
of Muslim societies from the 7th to the 19th century. The monu-
mental caliphate palace of Mshatta is unparalleled.
